I was able to do a very limited amount of initial shaping on the bandsaw, and after that I shaped the body and in fact the whole spider entirely by hand. My tools were a variety of rasps, rifflers, carving chisles, a scraper, block plane, and of course sandpaper. This seems absurd now, and I would never do it again. It was far to laborious and painfully slow. But at the time, in addition to the fact that I didn't have much choice, it somehow seemed appropriate. The shaping of Sheila was a prolonged meditation.
