I believe function and form are inseparable. I use traditional joinery techniques and tools, and solid woods. Every piece I make is one-of-a-kind, and every piece represents an effort at achieving my goals of precision, beauty, simplicity and uniqueness.
When I commit fine lumber to the saw, I do so with reverence and respect for the ancient trees sacrificed to produce it. I believe the only way to justify this sacrifice is to create work intended to last for many generations.
In order for this to happen, a number of criteria must be met. The work must be made from the best materials and built with the finest craftsmanship. It must have a fundamental beauty and function that rises above fads and trends, and it must be built in such a way that when it is damaged in 20, 60, or 200 years, either from use or accident, a skilled artisan can repair it. This is my entire aesthetic in a nutshell, and I approach all of my work, whether I’m making it strictly according to my own vision or with respect to a client’s desires, with the same goals in mind.
